So Angel has been delighted with the new addition of bunnies to our pet family! She runs out of the house in the morning to say her hellos! The rabbits have gotten so used to her now, they even let her lick them through their pen! It's too funny to watch. They must sense sweet Angels affection for them:) The other pic is of Angel after she had a great day digging with our boys (aged 8 and 3) in the mud! They were looking for stone/fossils in a huge muddy hole and guess who decided to join them! The boys looked the same as her when they were all done. I had to hose off all three! Ah, life in the country....

I am still in amazement how affectionate and gentle Angel is for her age! She adores Orla and Orla adores her. I had to laugh with my husband today as we were watching her out the window going from child to child checking up on them and giving kisses. Such a sweetie!!

Another vet check up - A++++ (healthy girl!)

We went back for her puppy check up again today. . .healthy and happy! She was a good girl for the vet. Other than being terrorized by a tiny lap dog (think Paris Hilton size dog -lol), it was a nice visit. The vet thinks she's going to be on the larger size for a female, with her paws and weight gain trend. She is getting big! But the vet thought she looked great. She has been such a wonderful new family member. Can't wait for the warm weather and trips to the water!

We had so much fun opening the mail today to find the jacket we ordered, personalized with Angel on it:) We also ordered a green dog jacket with her name, but it's a bit big for her now. The rate she's growing I don't think it will be long before my matching pair hit the walking trails together!

WIth the weather being milder and the snow not too deep, we've actually gotten to enjoy being outside with Angel! At first, I have to say the leash training was our biggest challenge since she thought it was a toy:). But with a little time, she learned "let's go" and now trots along side Orla for little walks. We are looking forward to the Spring when Angel is a little older to take her to the parks and water just down the road from us. She will have SO much FUN:)!!!

Second Vet Visit: Our golden healthy girl!

Went to her second vet visit today. Lots of compliments on her light golden color and sweetness! Everything continues to be perfect and she was excellently behaved for her visit! She got a "pedicure" (nails clipped), booster shots and a microchip if heaven forbid she ever got lost. Back in 3 weeks, but she was perfectly healthy!:)

Since she is the quietest dog we ever saw :) which is a good thing with a house of 3 dogs, we were curious what her bark sounded like. We found out holding her treat in the air made her bark once and used that behavior to come up with the Speak command. She is so funny and cute! She really know the command now and only "speaks" when we ask her to. Enjoy!

Just Registered Angel with AKC today

We finally got around to working on paper work after the holiday. So now it's official that Orla's beautiful puppy is registered with the AKC as "Christmas Angel". We are so impressed by her! She is a great snuggler with her special girl, gorgeous, and sweet. She seems to be much better with the teething this week and has completely settled in:) One thing I found that helped her with the teething is a frozen hand towel tied in a knot.

So Orla is very excited now that she is "official" in the AKC name:) and plans to show her locally with the kennel club for fun once she's old enough. Great things to come!

Toys, toys, lots of toys

I have to laugh looking at the floor this morning. I usually come down and have my coffee in the morning, let Angel out, feed her, let her out again and then leave her in the kitchen to play while I sit at my desk in the room. So her typical morning play time involves first finding everything on the floor she shouldn't have that the kids have left out :), when those disappear she plays with her toys. She has lots of toys for those chewy little chompers :)! So with about 20 toys all over the kitchen floor she runs around to each of them. When I throw a ball she chases it, plays, then moves on to the next toy. And it repeats for the morning while I have coffee and laugh at her cute puppiness! My 2 older dogs who lay around literally all day just watch her without budging an inch from the warm aga. I have noticed so far that she learns so quickly! Goldens really are as smart and eager to please as their reputation. She is more mouthy than the other dogs were as puppies, but we knew doing our research that goldens would be. We always use a firm no if it's mouthing one of us or our clothes and give her a toy with praise. She's catching on quickly!

Leave It and Leash Training

Today, with the new week we've gently started the leave it command (useful for those flapping loose pants attacks:) and leash training. We are looking forward to lots of big walks when Angel is a big beautiful golden and want her leash training to be a positive experience. So we are mostly letting her drag it around for a bit in the house and did a couple of indoor walks with fewer distractions. She is becoming much more curious and sniffing all around the house and yard this week, compared to her first week when she was a bit more shy. I think Henri (the bulldog) has helped with her confidence wondering a bit further into the yard. She is really enjoying her bulldog big sis! She is also loving all her toys. We laugh watching her leap around chasing her ball she loves. And she seems to have a real fondness for tennis balls. Lots of work and lots of FUN having a puppy again. We are enjoying our little ball of white fluff:)

Orla has been great being a puppy mom. She cuddles and cares for Angle very well. She's also been clicker training her with great results. They both seem to have fun during the mini-lessons:)

Usually I take my 2 older dogs mid week (very quiet and usually we are one of the only ones in the waiting room), but they had a slot available for this Saturday and we went. So fun to see all the people in there with their pets! There was the biggest bunny I have ever seen there to be boarded for the holidays, an adorable baby bulldog (also his first time in), and an assortment of other dogs. Everyone was chit chatting and it turned out to be a fun time for Orla to show off her golden girl! Everyone was saying how calm and sweet she is, even the vet. So all in all a fun morning at the vets:)! Our family is flying in from Florida today and my 14 year old niece is really looking forward to meeting the puppy, our bundle of joy. By the way, I was teasing with the vet and other patients parents that the puppy so far has been far easier than my 2 year old boy who was far noisier at the vets waiting room than anyone else - lol.

Books and Goldens...

The kids have enjoyed reading books lately with golden retriever characters. Two favorites were Runaway Retriever by T.T. Sutherland and One Golden Year (about being a therapy dog puppy raiser.) We also enjoyed learning more about the breed from The Everything GOlden Retriever Book (Bielakiewicz).

Henri and Angel

Our 8 year old bulldog is in love with the new puppy! We kept them apart via a baby gate for the first couple of days, since Henri was so excited and so big. But today everyone is calm and settled and we let the two together. It is so funny to watch. Angel follows Henri everywhere around. Henri is very protective of her. When our shih-tzu gave a little snarl not to be disturbed by the pup Henri let him know that behavior wasn't allowed. The two are quite the pair and so sweet to watch! Things are going very well here. I just have to watch Henri with Puff (the shih-tzu) that she doesn't reprimand him too harshly since he's a little thing too:) We're looking forward to another mini-training session tonight. Right now though Angel is sleeping quietly in the crate and all is quite and peaceful.

Thankfully, the meeting between Puff and Angel was great today. They played a bit outside and no problems at all (he can be a bit of an alpha). In the picture above you can see him just hanging out and her concentrating on that leaf (she's obsessed with leaves - lol).

Day 3 and she already is having mini-lessons and enjoying them. It took 5 minutes to teach her sit. Orla is looking forward to classes with her as she gets older and dreams to have her become a therapy dog - visiting community centers. They have a class locally when they are older to do this.

After a successful potty trip outside I let Angel hang out by my desk in the kitchen with me or one of the kids. She was so funny today, she curled up right at my feet and fell asleep. I picked her up gently and moved her to her bed in her crate and she hardly even woke. I have to admit being just a tad bit nervous before getting a retriever that they might be too much energy for a mom of 3. But I find she's been perfectly playful, but not the least bit hyper. A great speed for us! She is able to play for awhile with the kids and then just lay down and hang out with her chew toys or by your side while your doing something (making dinner, paperwork or going online, etc.) So very happy to report so far I think we've found a great breed for our family of 3 kids and she is equally good with all of them (even our almost 3 year old who is gentle and good with dogs). It's fun to watch him sit by his Thomas train table and play and see Angel sitting there too watching him!

Potty training and meeting our Bulldog

Today, the potty training continues to go incredibly well. Still no accidents in the crate! And she actually scratched and whined at the door to go out. We let her out and she did her business. Then came back in to play with her chew toys (no shortage of them:)! She also has been hanging out at the fence dividing her and our other dogs. Tails are wagging and I think they will soon be good play buddies when the fence finally comes down:) Still waiting for her to get completely settled in. So far, so good. Even the weather is cooperating today for some nice outdoor time with the much warmer temp and sunshine.

Orla has been super at following the schedule that our breeder gave us to aid in crate/potty training. No accidents yet, day 2. Mom is happy to have some quiet time with Orla in the mornings since now she is up early:) 6:30 am. Here's some pics of Orla on the potty training runs and Angel's nice coat to keep her warm and dry for the times she goes outside.

Welcome Home, Angel!

We had a fantastic first night with our new puppy, Angel! We picked her up yesterday from the breeder www.meadowviewgoldens.com She has been been true to her name, a complete angel. Peacefully slept through the night in her crate in Orla's room and was playful and happy since her arrival. We are thrilled with the new addition to the family.
